The People’s Prize for Literature

The People’s Prize for Literature project is about the power of readers and reading as a community.

The Northern School of Writing at The University of Salford is in the first phases of consultation with local community partners, The National Literacy Trust, The Reading Agency, librarians and publishers to explore how we can enrich the lives of our community through reading for pleasure.

Our ambition is to contribute towards Salford’s reading culture, using our experience and skills of working with young people and adults to devise new ways of tackling a deficit in reading for pleasure reported by surveys produced by The National Literacy Trust. We are asking what we can do to create excitement and joy around reading in a way that permeates local communities, families and schools.

Our longer term ambition is to create a reading city model in Salford, and a People’s Prize for Literature developed by the people of Salford.
